McKenzie Memorial Library
The McKenzie Memorial Library, located downtown McKenzie, contains more than 7,600 volumes. A full-time librarian is available during hours of operation.

In addition to the facilities’ resource material, the library recently added internet accessible computers.

The library also provides scheduled reading groups and programs for children, one of the most popular being the Summer Reading Program.

Senior Citizens Center
The McKenzie Senior Citizens Center is open daily and is a popular meeting place for seniors. Play cards, pool, watch TV, enjoy get together, pot-luck birthday celebrations, and much more.

Gaines Pool
Water aerobics at Gaines Pool on the Bethel College campus is a popular way to stay in shape and have a good time. Senior Water Aerobics classes are held Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Hydrorobics is an exercise program that anyone can participate in, no matter what their fitness level is. Hydrorobics is exercising in the water aerobically. For more information, call 731-352-6201.

Lap Swimming (Fitness Swimming) is offered at any time the pool is open. Lanes are first come first serve. Guests are encouraged, however, to share lanes when they are full. Open Swim includes free play in the shallow and deep ends of the pool. Costs to use Gaines Pool are $3.00 per person; $1.00 for Seniors and Children under 3. 3-month passes can also be purchased for individuals and family -- $65 individual pass; $175 for family pass (4 passes.)

Renaissance
Renaissance, Bethel’s upbeat entertaining “performance troupe” uses choirs, ensembles and soloists to showcase the talents of Bethel students. Renaissance, referred to as the Bethel College Performing Arts experience, encompasses Vocal Talent, Instrumental Talent and Dramatic Talent to thrill audiences near and far.

The Dixie Carter Performing Arts Center
The Dixie Carter Performing Arts Center and the Hal Holbrook Theatre (located in Huntingdon) provide various plays, musicians, and comedy acts. The center also provides a monthly Fun on the Farm Jamboree. The Fun on the Farm Jamboree is a 2 hour, live on the radio, fun-filled country music extravaganza featuring great entertainers the entire family will enjoy. Come spend an afternoon at The Dixie with a variety of performers sure to delight the young and old alike!

McKenzie Antique Mall
The McKenzie Antique Mall is an approximately 18,500 sq. ft. facility that provides 80-85 booths of antiques, collectibles and other unusual items. (731) 352-9344.


Equipment at Innovative Physical Fitness.

Fitness Centers
McKenzie Regional Hospital, Curves and Bethel College's community Wildcat Fitness Center provide fitness equipment and instruction on membership. Some provide a fitness and diet program and computerized bicycles and treadmills. Personal trainers are available for an additional fee.

 

Sandra School of Dance
Sandra Stone’s School of Dance has been operating in McKenzie for over twenty years. The school offers ballet, tap, and jazz dance instruction for ages four and older.

Gordon Browning Museum
The Gordon Browning Genealogical Museum is located in downtown McKenzie. The museum is dedicated to Gordon Browning, who served as the Governor of Tennessee from 1937 – 1939 and again from 1949 – 1953.

The museum has complete resources for researching families and history of Carroll and surrounding counties.

Research resources include census information for Carroll county, indexed copies of marriages from 1838 – 1880 and an obituary file with over 8,000 listings. The museum also has approximately 1,700 genealogical books and magazines. A librarian is available during hours or operation.

The museum also contains displays that replicate lifestyles from a variety of time periods. One such example is the reproduction of an 1800’s kitchen/living room. The room is complete with fireplace, spinning wheel and clothes from that time period.

Kapeller’s Family Taekwondo U.S.A.
Kapeller’s Family Taekwondo U.S.A., a School of the American Taekwondo Association, has been located in McKenzie since 1999. The school averages 60 students. Classes are available for ages three through adult.

Translated, Taekwondo means “Art of the hand and foot”, and originated in Korea. Taekwondo incorporates a variety of self-defense techniques such as kicking, blocking, striking and punching. Many of the techniques, such as the spinning and jumping kicks, are exclusive to Taekwondo and are not fount in any of the other martial arts.

In addition to learning self-defense techniques, students gain athletic ability and overall coordination. Also, because of the discipline and respect awareness initiated in Taekwondo, students gain a sense of personal commitment.

Trap Team
McKenzie’s Trap Team won national attention both as pioneers and excellent demonstration of skills in clay shooting. The Trap team is open to middle school and high school students.
